Last Monday our class got a surprise when a visitor came in and whispered something to Dina, and she in turn told us we would have no school on Tuesday.
The reason was the holiday Lag BaOmer, which as far as I can understand, celebrates both the temporary victory of the ancient Jews of Iudaea Province over the Romans and the end of the plague that killed 24,000 of Rabbi Akiva’s students.
Modern Israelis celebrate by getting loaded and lighting bonfires. I didn’t do this, because I was too busy building IKEA furniture – something ancient Jews also did (j/k).
Anyway, Dina said when we came back on Wednesday, we’d go out somewhere to take our class picture. We ran through a couple of ideas (various parks, squares, etc.), but Dina wanted a more original locale. We settled on a beautiful seashore spot, right near Hilton Beach. I was amazed at how beautiful the Mediterranean Sea is. Note to self: tone up the body so you can feel comfortable in swimwear and get your ass to the beach!
