After my P.T. session, I was really craving a shawarma – a falafel-type pita sandwich, except it has lamb in it sliced from a big slab. 30 shekels (about $7, with a Diet Coke). As I was eating, a man my age sat on the stool next to me. He was speaking Hebrew, but shifted right into some English words that he had no trouble pronouncing. It sort of registered with me. Then, he got a call on his cell, and spoke the Queen’s English in a proper British accent.
We talked when he finished the call, and it turns out he’s an Oleh Chadash, too! And he only just arrived a few days ago….meaning, I’m not the newest oleh in Israel anymore. (Kinda cool, that.) Although, he does have family here, has been here many times and speaks great Hebrew, so his situation is different than mine. Although, we quickly discussed our reasons for making Aliyah now, and the chief reason for both us was the crap economy in our countries of origin.
We exchanged information, and maybe I made a new friend.
